War Pensions & Armed Forces Compensation
How to claim compensation for an injury or illness caused by service — and what the difference is between WPS and AFCS.
[CLIENT TO REVIEW] Placeholder content.
Two different schemes
- War Pensions Scheme (WPS): for injuries or illnesses caused before 6 April 2005.
- Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS): for injuries or illnesses caused on or after 6 April 2005.
You can only claim under one, but Veterans UK helps you work out which.
What you can claim for
Physical injuries, illnesses caused or made worse by service, and mental health conditions including PTSD. There's no time limit on submitting an initial claim — but evidence gets harder to find the longer you wait.
What it pays
AFCS pays a lump sum and, for serious injuries, a Guaranteed Income Payment. WPS pays a weekly pension. Both can be paid in addition to PIP or Universal Credit.
How to apply
Apply through Veterans UK. You'll need service medical records, current medical evidence, and a clear statement of how the condition affects you now.
